Best Time to Visit African Safaris: A Month-by-Month Guide

There's no single "best" month for a Kenya safari - there's a best month for what you actually want to see. Dry season delivers the easiest game viewing of the year. Green season delivers newborn animals, dramatic skies, and lodge rates that drop by a third. And a two-week window in the middle of the year delivers the single most talked-about wildlife event on the continent. Here's how the calendar actually breaks down.

June to October: Dry Season, Easiest Viewing

Vegetation thins out, water sources shrink to a predictable few, and animals concentrate around them. This is the most reliable stretch for spotting the Big Five without hours of searching, and it's when most first-time visitors travel. It's also peak season everywhere - book your dates a few months out, especially for July and August.

July to September: The Mara River Crossings

Within dry season sits the main event: over a million wildebeest and zebra pushing north from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara, crossing crocodile-filled rivers along the way. Crossings aren't scheduled - herds move on their own timeline - so a guide who reads the herds well matters more here than almost any other trip. Three to four nights in the Mara gives you a realistic shot at witnessing one.

November to May: Green Season, Fewer Crowds

The short rains hit in November, followed by a long dry stretch from January to March that's arguably underrated - warm, mostly clear, and quieter than July. This is calving season in the southern Serengeti and a strong window for Amboseli, where newborn elephant calves and clear Kilimanjaro views are both more likely against a green backdrop. April and May bring the long rains - some camps close, roads get harder going, but rates hit their lowest point of the year and the light for photography is extraordinary.

Picking Your Window

If the migration crossings are the goal, build your trip around July-September and book the Mara months ahead. If you want the easiest wildlife viewing with a smaller crowd and softer prices, January-March is worth a serious look. And if budget matters more than any single event, April-May green season stretches your money the furthest.
